Welcome to my Gallery

A selection of current work is displayed in the Gallery page.

My website is a showcase.  Not all work appears on here.  Instragram is usually the first place that I post, both work in progress and completed paintings.  If you like something there do message me or give me a call.  Don't wait for it to appear here, on my website gallery, as many pieces don't make it this far.

Landscape Artist Stephen Hawkins

Having spent around 30 years living with my family in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, I have now moved to North Devon.  My inspiration from the South Downs, Brighton and London have been replaced with new rural landscapes and seascapes.

I specialise in oil paintings, capturing the subtle changes of mood, light and shade, throughout the seasons.  My time is split between en plein air painting from life and time in the studio.

I use traditional, age-old techniques for each painting, from hand stretching the canvas, or gesso-priming board, through to varnishing the finished picture and hand finishing the frame.  All materials are of the highest quality to ensure longevity, colour fastness and durability.

In 2014 I entered my first competition with the Society of All Artists and have continued to submit works to various exhibitions over the years.  See my results and some of the galleries I sell from here.

Galleries find my work to be highly collectable and pieces sell  regularly from galleries across the UK and USA.

Commissions

Do you want something more personal?

Whether you have a photo or a favourite place or just an idea, Stephen can make it into a work of art.  Please contact him to discuss your requirements.

Demonstrations

Stephen gives demonstrations to Art Clubs and Societies in a variety of mediums. Although his favourite medium is oil, he also uses pastels and mixed media demonstrations of pastel and acrylic.

In each session he will cover as many aspects of painting a piece of work as possible, from material and equipment, through compositional ideas, tone and colour theory, to painting techniques and methods.

Each booking is tailored to suit your individual ideas, covering a topic chosen by the group or maybe working on a particular theme or technique.

Workshops

Stephen hosts workshops, either half day or more usually, a whole day. Each student will receive individual tutoring whilst they work on their own piece.

Each workshop can be made up of a mix of demonstrations of techniques, appraisals, personal assistance and advice.  It is usual to pick a theme or subject that the group can work on.

Tuition

I teach at a number of Art Clubs and Societies, small private groups and individual students.

Individual students can be accommodated in my small studio.

En Plein Air workshops can be for individuals or groups.
