Quiet Beach - 30”x 20” oil on canvas
Surprisingly I was able to paint all of this painting with one brush. It was a large fan brush and I’ve included a photo of the very brush. I use fan brushes quite a lot but not usually for everything 😂 I did the underpainting and then I just continued to use that 1 brush. After a while I thought “how much of this can I do with this brush? “ then it was “I wonder if I can do the whole thing?”
And the answer to that is, yes 😂
It’s possible to use that brush in a multitude of ways, and loaded with different colours on each side. I also used the handle point.
The most difficult marks were the bright highlights and the one stroke shiny bits, but if it was not good I just squashed it back into shape with the surrounding colour or scraped it off and tried again.
If you scroll through you’ll see other paintings of the same subject. This is because been a bit of project I’ve had on the go, starting with the original 8”x6” enpleinair study. I have been messing around with ideas, sketching varying compositions, even taking photographs and using the editing tools on the phone to quickly change the boundaries of the painting to create further compositions.
Anyway, I’ve heard of artists forgetting their brushes and using hedge sticks. I’d be interested to hear about other artists weird painting tools. What are the strangest things that you’ve used to apply paint?
